This beautiful light cotton scarf shawl is patterned with Dabu mud-resist block print.
Crafted in a supremely soft and lightweight handloom cotton.  The shawl is meticulously  embellished with a laborious single, double or triple-step dabu mud resist block print. This achieves  a thoroughly contemporary aesthetic to this ancient craft.
Dabu mud resist is quite a messy process! but takes great skill. Carved wooden blocks are used to transfer the mud onto the fabric. While the mud is still wet, sawdust is sprinkled onto the printed mud, to speed its drying, and to stop the mud from transferring when the fabric is laid out in the sun to dry.  When the mud has dried the fabric is then dyed and where the mud has been applied with the wooden block the fabric resists the dye creating the desired pattern. Dabu gets its name from the Hindi word dabana which means “to press”. The origins of dabu have been traced as far back as to the eighth century as indicated by a fabric specimen found in Central Asia.
